January 16, 2020 Dinner Meeting
Are We Safe? Quantifying Safety Performance.
Presented by: Mitch Henderson

We project managers have had the importance of schedule, cost and quality drummed into us to no end. Go into a good operational center and there will be cost, schedule, and quality metric graphs everywhere and usually only a single subpar “Days Since Injury” safety metric, if that. It is ironic that SAFETY often isn’t given the same emphasis yet poor safety can sink a project with delays, additional costs, dissatisfied or injured customers and staff or worse.

This story is about a medical center that was plagued by construction OSHA violations but had no effective way of tracking compliance among the various contractors. Frustrated inspectors and in-house project managers knew that some contractors were better than others but didn’t have enough proof to force contractual adherence. The solution turned out to be a robust, integrated safety measurement system that all overseers understood and used; they and the contractors became more conversive about safety and the outcome was improved average safety performance and its variance.
